While the game is now nearing its second anniversary, God of War clearly earned its accolades and praise even well after release. Not only did God of War earn our award for Game of the Year in 2018, but the game continues to be celebrated for its achievements in storytelling and technological achievements. Of course, one of the most significant parts of the game’s achievements was its single-take camera effect with no cuts, with new insights from developer Santa Monica Studio revealing how it happened.
Sony and Santa Monica Studio have released the latest episode of the Worlds Collide podcast, which is a limited series that explores the various components and elements of God of War in a deeper way and how they came together to tell this incredible story. The second episode, titled “The No-Cut Camera,” gives a deeper look into how the studio managed to pull off one of the game’s most impressive effects from both a storytelling and cinematic standpoint.
According to the PlayStation Blog, the single take camera effect was “a miracle of collaboration across many departments,” with the podcast featuring Santa Monica Studio’s Dori Arazi (director of photography and cinematic art lead), Phil Wilkins (senior staff programmer), and Erol Oksuz (lead gameplay camera designer). With the studio themselves saying that creating the effect “was bold, it was new…it was damn near impossible,” the story of how it all happened is surely a fascinating one to hear, especially in podcast form. The studio also shared some behind-the-scenes images of filming various scenes from the game with some of the cast, including Christopher Judge as Kratos.
