Just a little bit ago, Ubisoft gave us our first look at Ghost Recon Breakpoint. In the game’s reveal trailer, we see that Jon Bernthal will act as the game’s villain, ex-Ghost Cole D. Walker. We sat down with the game’s creative director, Eric Couzian, and asked him why the team decided to go with Bernthal.
He told us this:
“When we started the project and said we wanted a deeper storyline that we used to have, the first statement we had was, “What is stronger than the Ghosts?” Since we always say they’re the best of the best, it was hard to find someone stronger. If you faced the Ghosts you’d have to face the worst enemy you can meet. That’s the reason we designed the Wolves since you are the leader of the Ghosts, we needed someone to embody the leader of the Wolves.
Because of the TV show we saw with Jon, his background with military universes, his personality. He’s not a trope character, even though he’s the bad guy. You will understand his motivation and it’s interesting to see how he used to view the Ghosts and drifted slowly. You feel that there’s a conflict deep within him.”
Bernthal’s no stranger to action-packed movies and television shows like The Punisher, The Walking Dead, Sicaro, Baby Driver, Fury, and more. This’ll be the first role in a video game where Bernthal acts as the villain. He’s certainly a solid choice as I can’t think of many other on-screen actors who are more intimidating. But I’m mostly going off of his roles as Shane from The Walking Dead and the anti-hero, Frank Castle, in The Punisher.
Ubisoft already gave us a look at Major Cole D. Walker in the latest update for Ghost Recon Wildlands, which acted as a sort of preview to this new game in the franchise. His character appears to have had a close relationship with Breakpoint’s main character, and we’ll likely see how his decision to become a terrorist and lead a new group called the Wolves unfolds throughout the story in Breakpoint.
Ghost Recon Breakpoint will be available on October 4 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
