Nintendo published on October 31 its second-quarter financial report, revealing many interesting details. We most notably learned that Fire Emblem: Three Houses now sold over 2,29 million copies worldwide.

Fire Emblem Awakening, released in 2012, sold over 2.28 million copies by the end of 2018. Fire Emblem Fates, released in 2015, is the current best seller of the franchise with 2.94 million copies sold by the end of 2018,  thanks to how it had different versions.

However, Fire Emblem: Three Houses sold over 2.29 million copies in only three months since its release in July 2019. As such, Fire Emblem: Three Houses will definitely surpass Fire Emblem Fates’ sales and become the highest-selling Fire Emblem game ever. French journalist Oscar Lemaire, who analyzed these numbers, believes so as well.

I definitely think Three Houses deserves these sales. It’s by far the best Fire Emblem game we got in a long while. As the franchise will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2020, it’s also the first Fire Emblem that goes so deep when it comes to individual character development. This is most notably thanks to how Three Houses is much more chatty than its predecessors, and often feels like a visual novel, assuming you don’t skip anything and pursue every single Support Event.

These sale numbers also demonstrate Nintendo’s risk-taking approach with the Fire Emblem franchise paid off. Fire Emblem: Three Houses has a very minimal focus on romance and has no children system, even though it was one of the most popular aspects of Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates. Fire Emblem Three Houses was also mostly developed by Koei Tecmo instead of Intelligent Systems.

I’m personally very happy with this seeing I consider Three Houses a masterpiece. It also shows how there are still many players in the world who don’t believe graphical quality means everything. Certain graphical aspects of  FE3H look mediocre or comically terrible like its clouds.  I’ve personally never really cared about graphics, and I couldn’t care less about the race to graphical realism all triple-A productions are participating in. I do get amazed when graphics look amazing though. I remember dearly the first time I’ve seen Shenmue and later on Shenmue II on Dreamcast and how beautiful it seemed. But I also largely have a preference for 2D or anime-styled graphics and their timelessness.
