It appears that the boys are coming back. Well, sort of. As reported by Kotaku, a new title set in the world of Final Fantasy XV is currently in development overseas. The little bits of information we have so far, translated from the Korean tech website Inven, state that the tentatively titled Final Fantasy XV Mobile, will be an MMORPG developed using the Unreal Engine 4. This latest title is being developed in a joint partnership between the studios JSC of South Korea and GAIA in China, with Shanghai Oriental Pearly Group in charge of publishing.
This may be the first big reveal for the game, but it isn’t actually the first we’ve heard of existence. Respected user Daniel Ahmad, @ZhugeEX on twitter, actually pointed out this morning that this was initially announced back in December of 2017. During the initial announcement, it was scheduled for a 2019 release, but only in Mainland China. A quick look at my calendar tells me that this didn’t end up coming to pass, but for good reason! This extra time has allowed the scope of the game to grow and evolve and it is now is planned to release worldwide.
This latest adventure begins right after Noctis and crew right after the prince leaves on his journey. This won’t be quite the same world you remember though. Taking place in a parallel version of the world, the sky will now be home to giant floating continents in addition to other new areas. Don’t fret though as you will still be able to visit familiar locations too. If this sounds exciting to you, you’re in luck. A release date is still forthcoming, but fans can expect a launch trailer sometime in the first half of this year.
I find myself more so intrigued by this announcement than excited. My time spent with Final Fantasy XV will always be remembered fondly (with exception of the original Chapter 13…). The improvements and added episodes greatly enhanced the experience and the world I was exploring. I even found myself rather fond of the multiplayer Comrades spin-off and Pocket Edition. That being said, I’m to the point now where I’m happy to leave XV in the rear-view mirror. It was a great ride, but let’s get the show on the road and see where this fantasy goes next. Car puns, intended.
