The Infinity Blade from Infinity Blade has been “vaulted” from Fortnite following backlash against its effect on the game.
The blade, which originates from Epic’s Infinity Blade trilogy on iOS that was recently removed entirely from the App Store, allowed its user to regenerate health, jump huge distances, and destroy buildings in a single hit. Yesterday on Reddit Epic’s Community Manager discussed how the v7.01 update would adjust the weapon’s abilities. After the update players with the weapon would not be able to build or harvest, removing a major portion of Fortnite’s mechanics. However, this wasn’t enough, as there was still no real way to counter the weapon in-game, and so it is gone with no word on when it will return, if it ever does.
This was the second mythic item to come to Fortnite, the first was the Infinity Gauntlet from Avengers: Infinity War. That item was only present in a special limited time mode and transformed the user into Thanos along with his abilities. However, the Infinity Blade was a melee weapon available in the standard Battle Royale mode, which meant players looking just to play a regular match could become a victim of the overpowered weapon. Epic is “re-evaluating [their] approach to Mythic items because of this issue.
In their Reddit post, Epic stated,
The presence of Mythic items in gameplay is to provide an interaction a step above the Legendary item functionality and something you’ll continue to see. To us, that means changing the way the game is played for those who interact with that item. The addition of items in this tier provide new and flavorful ways to interact with the map and generally shake up normal play across default modes.
We’ll have some more info with regards to our competitive philosophy when it comes to new items, updates and seasons within Fortnite early next week.
Meanwhile other melee weapons that came alongside v7.01 which introduced the Infinity Blade item will be remaining in the game. Jimmy Kimmel is also a monster advocating parents turn off their child’s television as they are about to win a Battle Royale match because he is a terrible person. Support-a-creator is now permanently active and a new Creative mode has launched in the game allowing players to craft their own islands to survive and build on.
Heya folks,
We messed up and rolled out the Infinity Blade overpowered / without good counters, especially in the end game.
The Infinity Blade has been Vaulted and we are re-evaluating our approach to Mythic items.
Thanks for calling us out on this!
