Following yesterday’s story about the widespread issues with Anthem on PS4 that have been causing consoles to crash, publisher EA has now responded and is asking players for help.
In a post on EA’s website, the publisher said that it is currently looking into problems with Anthem on PS4 but has yet to be able to determine the root cause. Because of this, EA is asking for the Anthem community on PS4 to reply in the forum thread with their situations that have led to crashes. “We are currently in process of gathering information about the PS4 issues so we can determine the root cause,” the post said. EA then outlined the way in which they’d like this information shared to best help them find a fix.
As of this moment, there have been over 1000 responses on the forum related to crashing issues on PS4. Whatever the root cause of this problem is, it seems to be quite widespread.
Luckily, some smarter than I over on Reddit seemed to have already found a solution to keep your PS4 from crashing further with Anthem. According to Reddit user u/katcher 12, the problem with Anthem can be fixed as it is a similar one that they ran into years ago with another game.
This was the solution laid out in the thread on Reddit:
All of your data is still on the HDD or SSD currently in your consoles. Just temporarily inaccessible. HOWEVER, this issue is easily rectified.
You must boot your console into Safe Mode by holding the power button on the console until you hear two beeps. It must be the power button on the console itself, you cannot boot the console into safe mode via the controller. Once in Safe Mode you should be able to select an option labeled “Rebuild Database”. This will fix the issue.
I had a problem exactly like the one going on now a couple years back with the Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5HD Remix. It might be a different game but the issue was exactly the same as was the way of remedying it. I really hope this helps those who still wish to give Anthem a chance despite the technical disaster that it is on all systems. I’m hoping I’m right about this. I’d rather not hear of people throwing money at a new console despite the “bricked” one being completely recoverable.
As mentioned in the final line of that post, the Anthem crashing issue shouldn’t outright be bricking consoles as previously reported. It seems like that game just has a nasty habit of crashing consoles altogether rather than making them useless hunks of junk. EA also hasn’t commented on the potential of this problem “bricking” consoles either and the reports from players that have said Anthem has bricked their own devices have been small in number. That’s still not to say that it hasn’t indeed transpired for some, though but proof as of this writing hasn’t really come forward.
Still, this is a pretty nasty issue that EA and BioWare need to fix as soon as possible. It’s a pretty bad look when someone from the community comes forward with a solution before the developer or publisher ever do. Hopefully, the feedback EA is receiving right now can lead to a quick fix in the future.
Anthem is out now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
