In lieu of The Last of Us Part II, Iron Man VR, and Wasteland 3 being recently delayed as a byproduct of the COVID-19 pandemic, many have started to wonder how this ongoing issue may affect release schedules for games planned to arrive later in 2020. In the case of perhaps the most notable release of the year, it seems things are still right on track.
According to CD Projekt president Adam Kiciński, the release date for Cyberpunk 2077, which is scheduled for September 2020, will still be met, even though the studio working on the game has been impacted by the novel coronavirus. “Since mid-March we have been working from home, while ensuring continuity of all our of operations. Our goals haven’t changed; first and foremost, we intend to release Cyberpunk 2077 in September,” Kiciński said in the opening statements of CD Projekt’s financial release today. “We feel motivated and have the necessary tools at our disposal to meet this goal. We also believe that our longstanding strategy of avoiding debt and accumulating cash reserves makes us well prepared to meet any hardships which may be in store during these troubled times.”
This is now the second such time that the team at CD Projekt has stated that it fully intends to release Cyberpunk 2077 on-time this year. Just last month, CD Projekt Red released a statement mirroring Kiciński’s own today saying that despite these new working conditions at the studio, the highly-anticipated sci-fi title should be releasing on its intended date.
When Cyberpunk 2077 was delayed earlier in 2020, CDPR made clear that the game was fully playable start to finish, but that it just needed additional bug fixes and playtesting to meet the studio’s standard. Because everything within the game is now seemingly present, perhaps this is why CD Projekt continues to feel so confident that it will hit its launch date. Then again, perhaps release plans could still change in the coming months and CD Projekt just doesn’t want to let on as much just yet. We’ll have to wait and see.
Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia later this year on September 17. A version of the game upgraded for Xbox Series X is also said to be in the pipeline, too.
