At the end of December this year, Sony’s Japan Studio will be missing one of its senior producers who has worked on Bloodborne, Demon’s Souls Remake, and some other titles. Teruyuki Toriyama will continue his career at his new company soon.
Revealed with a tweet by Toriyama himself, he’s going to leave SIE Japan Studio at the end of this year. Toriyama hasn’t specified the reason behind this decision, but this is not an end for his game developing career as he revealed that he is going to continue this job at his new company. Here is the tweet:
[Notice]
I will be leaving SIE WWS JAPAN Studio at the end of Dec. To all the users who have supported JAPAN Studio so far, thank you so much! I will continue to take on the challenge of creating new game IPs in my new company, and I ask for your continued support. #JAPANStudio— 鳥山晃之 (Teruyuki Toriyama) | SIE JAPAN Studio (@TORIYAMA_SIE) December 24, 2020
Bloodborne was a mostly praised action-adventure that developed in partnership between FromSoftware and SIE Japan Studio. With the latter taking the helm for world design and environmental storytelling.
Other than that, the studio’s partnership with BluePoint Games on delivering a 9th-gen remake of PS3’s Demon’s Souls as a launch title for PS5 end up in a classy masterpiece and a love letter to the fans of the original game. Moreover, he supported the team behind Astrobot: Rescue Mission, one of the most successful titles of PSVR in the last generation of consoles, and Déraciné.
Now it’s anyone’s guess that who will take the role of the former producer in Sony’s Japan Studio, and what projects Toriyama would be working on in his new company.
Aside from the two mentioned above, Toriyama was also a part of the development team behind Soul Sacrifice and Soul Sacrifice Delta, two PS Vita exclusive third-person RPGs that were launched back in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
Recently, Bokeh Game Studio, a development team formed by the original Silent Hill creator and some of the former members of SIE Japan Studio, revealed that they are working on a new horror-oriented action-adventure project that is slated to launch sometime in 2023 on PC and hopefully consoles.
