When publisher Microids and developer Pendulo Studios announced that they were developing a Blacksad adaptation back in 2017, I was pretty excited. Blacksad is a great graphic novel that follows a hard-boiled noir detective who happens to be an anthropomorphic cat. In the early videos that focused on story and character creation, the game looked like it might be a solid title that fans of the comic series and games like The Wolf Among Us might have a great time. However, the newest gameplay trailer has me a bit worried about the game just a few days away from release. It’s a lengthy trailer, but give it a watch below.
As might’ve noticed, there are some issues in that trailer. Obviously, this is a story-based game. It doesn’t need great gameplay or perfect details to still be worth a playthrough. In fact, while the gameplay looks pretty basic, it doesn’t seem out of place in the adventure game genre. However, seeing so many technical hiccups (or what I hope are technical hiccups) in a trailer gives me a little pause.
The whole trailer seems to oddly lack sound effects in most places. For instance, you can hear the rain coming down when Blacksad is outside, but you don’t hear anything when a door opens or closes. There are also weird instances of the characters skipping lines that are in the subtitles. Those are just a few examples of the issues I noticed while watching this trailer. Hopefully, this is from an earlier build and the final game will be much smoother. After all, I’m a fan of the franchise and would love for the series to reach more people. This trailer; however, makes me temper my excitement quite a bit.
Blacksad: Under the Skin comes to Mac, PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 5. The Nintendo Switch version will come later this year.
