Today during Nvidia’s Geforce Celebration hosted in Cologne, the graphics card manufacturer uses some hotly anticipated games to show off its brand new RTX ray tracing technology that will be at the base if the new Geforce RTX 20 series of GPUs.

We see Battlefield V by DICE, with flames and explosions reflecting on specular surfaces despite the fact that they don’t appear on the screen. This is impossible to do with traditional screen-space reflections.

Eidos Montréal’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider is inevitably all about shadows, showing how much softer and natural they look with the help of ray tracing.

Last, but not least, Metro: Exodus shows global illumination done “right” with ray tracing, in comparison to techniques currently used to fake it.

The differences are certainly most striking.

You can check out all the video below, alongside a trailer dedicated to Battlefield V showing pretty much the same things but in a much more condensed way.
