Atlus published a brand new trailer for 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim on its official site. The last trailer for the game was more than a year ago so this is really exciting. This new trailer introduces the 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim Prologue demo, which will be available in four different ways for PS4 starting March 14 in Japan.
Let’s analyze the trailer. First off, there’s a really interesting bit at the beginning. The trailer confirms what some, myself included, have been suspecting for years: each character needs to touch, swipe to be precise, a specific part of their body in order to summon their Sentinel, the giant mechas featured in the game.
Next, what seem like dialogues choices are actually subjects or themes the characters can do some sort of action related to them. For example, all the options available are always accompanied by the word “think” in Japanese, and pressing Triangle will make the character ponder that subject. It seems other actions are available depending on the subject and are triggered by another button. All characters also take a specific thinking-like posture when these options appear. It’s still unclear how this plays into the game, and if 13 Sentinels has actual choices during dialogues like in most “Dramatic Adventure”, visual novel-like games.
The trailer also reveals for the first time the names of all 13 protagonists in the game, along with their voice actresses and actors. Here’s a list based on the order which they appear on in the trailer. They all say a one-liner without context. We can’t really grasp what they’re talking about but it gives us a glimpse of their personalities:
Juurou Kurabe: “Sometimes, it’s as if I can sense something”. Voiced by Hiro Shimono.
Iori Fuyusaka: “Remembering what happened back then always makes me so excited”. Voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki.
Shuu Amiguchi: “If there are girls in trouble, I’m always here to help”. Voiced by Suzuki Tatsuhisa.
Megumi Yukishiji: “If I can accomplish my goals, I’d even sell my soul to the devil” Voiced by Maaya Uchida.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: “I hate people who waste food”. Voiced by Takayuki Ishii
Yuki Takamiya: “I’ll never be their pawn!” Voiced by Ami Koshimizu
Ei Sekigahara: “Our escape route is closed off!” Voiced by Daisuke Namikawa.
Natsuno Minami: “You’re actually an alien right?” Voiced by Kaoru Sakura
Keitarou Miura: “I’ve trained all my life for this day”. Voiced by Kaito Ishikawa.
Tomi Kisaragi: “Just what is going on?”. She’s voiced by M.A.O
Nenji Ogata: “Well, I did beat the hell out of it” Voiced by Seki Tomokazu
Ryouko Shinonome: “Don’t worry about me”. Voiced by Saori Hayami
Renya Gouto: “The computer’s data is always trustworthy” Voiced by Fukuyama Jun.
The game is full of talented, popular voice actresses and actors. Keep in mind there’s no official English spelling for the names yet and this is subject to change. All the characters are based on a different late 20th-century Japanese high school student stereotype, but one of the strengths of Japanese games is that stereotypical characters tend to turn out unique as you play and learn about them, so I’m not worried.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim Prologue was announced a few hours after Vanillaware Director George Kamitani posted a happy New Year message on Twitter, saying that the company is currently focusing on 13 Sentinels.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim will release for PlayStation 4 on a currently unknown date. The game was already announced outside of Japan. As of now, there has been no announcement regarding an English version of the demo.
