Despite having an extremely troubled start, CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 has sat pretty atop Steam’s charts every week since its launch last December. While the title hasn’t faced much competition with new releases, it’s still an impressive feat considering the many problems the game had and the fact that players could refund the title should they not be satisfied.
Five weeks after launch, however, Cyberpunk 2077’s long reign at the top of the chart —including its pre-release standing— is finally over. The expansive RPG has been replaced by a game currently facing a massive resurgence, Rust.
The survival hit released in early access in 2013 and built up an army of fans, however, over a period of time, the game’s popularity began to wain. Over the last few weeks, the game has begun to find its footing again, thanks to a bunch of high profile streamers jumping back on and a variety of other changes. This lead the game to break its player count record twice over the course of a week at the start of January, making over $1 million in the process.
Cyberpunk’s reign at the stop still deserves its plaudits. The fact it managed to sell consistently for such a sustained period, after receiving 8 million pre-orders and selling over 13 million copies within a few days, is still impressive. This lead the game to turn a profit on its first day, and evidently continue selling,
The problems continue to plague CD Projekt Red, however. Sony and Microsoft have been allowing refunds on their respective consoles and the studio is still facing a myriad of lawsuits and a potential 10 per cent fine from Poland’s Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK).
Although sales have slowed down a little, the game is still likely to continue selling. CD Projekt Red are hard at work fixing Cyberpunk 2077 and are also preparing DLC for launch early this year. The official website for the DLC is live and the content is scheduled for release at some point in the first quarter of 2021.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on Google Stadia, PC, PS4 and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series S|X versions due out later this year.
