The anticipated new entry in Bandai Namco’s long-running action RPG franchise, Tales of Arise, has been officially delayed and will no longer release this year.
The delay announcement came with it a message from the game’s producer, Yusuke Tomizawa:
As you may have already seen in media stories and on our social media channels, we have made the decision to delay the launch timing of “Tales of Arise”, the latest title in the “Tales of” series.
The goal for Tales of Arise is to provide a familiar but innovative gameplay experience to fans of the series, while pushing the technical envelope to deliver a high level of graphical quality to impress both long-time players and those who have never played a Tales of game. Development on the title has move steadily forward in 2020 as we overcame challenges along the way.
While COVID-19 has affected some aspects of development, we’ve done our best to adapt to the situation and have implemented remote development capabilities for our team.
However, to achieve the quality and provide the gorgeous experience we envision for our players, we will need more time to realize that vision and therefore we decided to delay the launch timing for Tales of Arise.
A new launch window update will be provided once we have more details to share.
In the meantime, the determination of our development team has not weakened. It is always darkest before the dawn, as illustrated in the image below. We hope you will join us as a bring a new Tales of adventure to light.
As an apology, the team revealed a new piece of artwork to go along with the announcement, showing two of the game’s protagonists Alphen and Shionne, overlooking the landscape at sunrise.
This delay, while unfortunate, isn’t all that surprising since we haven’t received any news, updates, or trailers for the title since September of last year at the Tokyo Game Show. This drought of information even lasted through the Tales of Festival which was held earlier this month, which many people expected some sort of update to come from before it was revealed that Tales of Arise would be skipping the event. What is slightly surprising, however, is that not only was it delayed, but the date is no listed as TBD and not 2021.
I’m hoping that we will get some sort of new trailer or information in a couple of months during the Tokyo Game Show Online event in September. I’m not expecting release information, but perhaps a reveal and information on additional party members would be nice. Anything at this point really would be welcome. The scant details we do know though are that Tales of Arise will not be connected to previous titles of the series and that the connection between Alphen and Shionne will be crucial to the plot. Alphen, the young man, wielding the two swords in the trailers, is constantly burning and hurting himself due to using the flaming sword while Shionne is constantly healing his injuries. How this balancing act will play out in gameplay, I’m excited to see.
Tales of Arise was first revealed back at E3 2019 with a planned release on the PS4, Xbox One and PC, and is being produced by Yusuke Tomizawa who previously was the producer on the God Eater and Code Vein titles.
