Are ya ready kids? Ever since being announced last year by publisher THQ Nordic, you could soak up the hype for SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated with, well, a sponge. And with today’s announcement that the game is coming out June 23, expect to see a lot more of the porous cartoon icon in the coming months.
Announced through a trailer posted on YouTube, we also got a look at more of what Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated has in store. Namely, the video shows previously unseen boss fights, gameplay as Sandy the Squirrel and Patrick Star, and, most notably, a brand new multiplayer game mode. From what’s shown, multiplayer seems like a simple wave-based survival mode that you can tackle with a friend.
There’s a good reason behind the excitement for Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated. Besides being a nostalgia trip for anyone that played the game when it originally came out in 2003, Battle for Bikini Bottom has an enormous speedrunning scene behind it, even to this day. And by to this day, I don’t mean last year or last month. I mean a speedrunner named SHiFT just set a new world record for beating the classic title six days ago.
Now, if you’re a die-hard SpongeBob fan, and simply buying the remastered version of Battle for Bikini Bottom isn’t enough for you, there’s more good news. The game is also releasing in two other special versions – the Shiny and F.U.N editions. The Shiny edition, which will run you $150, comes with the usual special edition accouterments of stickers and art prints, as well as a statue of SpongeBob and a pair of his tennis socks. If that wasn’t enough, you could spend the ungodly amount of $30o on the game’s F.U.N edition. Meant only for the truest of fans, this version of the game comes with everything in the shiny edition, plus statues of Sandy and Patrick, and a handful of tiki head key chains.
Once again, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated is coming out on June 23. It’s releasing across platforms, on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Switch, and is available for pre-order on all platforms save PS4. Pre-order options on the PS4 will be coming at a later date.
