Falcom and NIS America have announced that The Legend of Heroes Trails of Cold Steel III will be launching in U.S and Europe on Nintendo Switch in Spring 2020. Falcom’s President Toshihiro Kondo revealed the info via an interview with our comrades at Gamespot. The Switch version will also launch in Japan sometime after the western launch.
A demo will also be coming shortly before the game’s launch. The Switch version of Trails of Cold Steel III will be running in 720P, 30FPS, in both docked and portable mode. The Switch version will include all the DLCs from the PS4 version, mainly made of bonus costumes.
With Trails of Cold Steel III launching on Switch, this is the first time ever that a main episode in the Trails/Kiseki JRPG series, which has been going on for 15 years now, is releasing on a Nintendo console. One of the spinoffs, Akatsuki no Kiseki, recently launched on Nintendo Switch.
This is also the first time ever a Falcom game gets released in the west before Japan, but putting it into context, it’s only a port, and Trails of Cold Steel IV has been out in Japan since September 2018 on PS4. However, it gives us hope that a similar Switch version for Trails of Cold Steel IV might be announced later on.
As a side note, one of the reasons the Trails/Kiseki series takes so long to get localized is the incredible amount of text. Trails of Cold Steel III has one of the biggest scripts in video game history.
Falcom also already teased what will come next for the Kiseki/Trails series, including remakes for Zero no Kiseki and Ao no Kiseki. If these end up coming to both PS4 and Switch, and in English, every fan will go crazy with excitement.
Trails of Cold Steel 3 launched in the west on PS4 in October 2019. You can check here our own interview with Toshihiro Kondo.
