August just got way, way better. How? Because today DotEmu announced that Windjammers will hit PS4 and PS Vita on August 29th.
For those that don’t know: Windjammers is the “original flying disc game” — aka a sports arcade game — that first hit all the way back in 1994 via Data East for the Neo Geo arcade system. Upon release — and ever since — the game became a niche, cult-classic, with a hardcore following and thus always had potential to one day to return.
And now it has returned, featuring six courts (from sunny beach to crowded stadium) and six characters, each with his or her own speed/power stats, nationality, and unique special throw.
The game also boasts 5 game modes (Arcade, Local Versus, Online Quick Match, and Ranked Match), 2 unlockable mini-games (Dog Distance and Bowling), and new HD menus. As mentioned before, the PS4 and PS Vita release will also have online play, a first for the series. Trophies and leaderboards have also been confirmed — though there is no word on a platinum trophy.
For those unfamiliar with the premise of Windjammers, it’s quite simple: it is basically Pong or air hockey, where players continuously shoot a disc at the goal zone of the opponent, deploying a variety of throws (normal throw, toss up, curve throw, power throw, special throw, power toss up, and counter) to score.
It’s currently unclear how much Windjammers will cost when it launches. However, it does have a new characters trailer that highlights the game’s six unique windjammers you can play as — you can check it out below:
*inhales deeply* Ah, what a time to be alive.
