My Puyo Puyo prayers have been answered. SEGA announced today that Puyo Puyo Champions, a multiplayer focused puzzle game known as Puyo Puyo Esports in Japan, will be coming westward next month to PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Check out the announcement trailer below:
This new Puyo Puyo game will only cost players $9.99 when it comes out on May 7. That being said, it is clear that Puyo Puyo Champions is mainly built upon the presentation foundation set by Puyo Puyo Tetris, which came to PS4, and Nintendo Switch in 2017 and PC in 2018. According to SEGA, there will be 24 different character for players to choose from and features the rulesets from Puyo Puyo 2 (Tsu) and Puyo Puyo Fever.
As I mentioned previously, Puyo Puyo Champions is mainly geared towards online play. While there is solo play, the global online multiplayer modes have been bolstered and an eight player tournament mode has been added. Puyo Puyo Champions also lets players easily save replays and a Battle History timeline exists for each match so players know where to look to the best moments of one. In an era of super competitive puzzle games like Tetris 99, Puyo Puyo Champions should feel right at home.
For those of you who are curious about dual audio, SEGA also confirmed that the western version of this title will feature it. Between matches, players will be able to Switch between Japanese and English audio as well as English, Spanish, German, and French text.
You can check out the first screenshots for this title below. Puyo Puyo Champions will release for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in North America and Europe on May 7, 2019.
