Publisher Bigben Interactive and developers Black Shamrock and Cyanide Studios have announced Paranoia: Happiness is Mandatory a new “darkly humorous CRPG. The game will be coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One on a 2019 release date that’s listed as “when Friend Computer feels like it.”

Paranoia: Happiness is Mandatory is the official adaptation of the tabletop role-playing game created by Dan Gelber, Greg Costikyan, and Eric Goldberg. The RPG is set in a dystopian future city controlled by A.I and the game follows suit.

Players are clones who are welcomed to the “Alpha Complex,” the main city in Paranoia, where they are appointed as “Troubleshooters.” You control a team of four Troubleshooters in your tasks for Friend Computer, customizing each with 16 different skills.

Interestingly, the game uses player death as a means of progression through the cloning system. “If you die, you progress!” reads the game’s Steam page. It’s not exactly clear what that means, but it could mean that they are getting rid of save scumming by allowing you progress even when you die.

The original Fallout vibes are strong. In fact, if you told me the original Fallout team at Interplay Productions had a Paranoia campaign happening during their lunch breaks, I wouldn’t be surprised. The big difference seems to be that Paranoia looks to take place entirely in a Vault-like city. Instead of going outside to see what happened when the bomb dropped, you’re in Alpha Complex and trying to find a way to stay there.

We’ll know more when Friend Computer decides we’re ready. For now, just check out the trailer below and remember: Stay Happy!

Paranoia: Happiness is Mandatory is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One sometime in 2019.
