There’s a lot to be excited about the re-release of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on Nintendo Switch. One of those key components that wasn’t available in the original Wii U version of the game, nor the Nintendo 3DS version, is co-op gameplay. Ever faithful to the Nintendo brand, personalities Kit and Krystal teamed up to showcase eight minutes of gameplay from the upcoming puzzle game.
Seen in the Nintendo Minute video below, Kit and Krystal jump straight into the action starting at level Shy Guy Heights. While Krystal plays as Captain Toad doing the main bulk of the activity, Kit (as second-player) is able to use the second Joy-Con as a pointer. The activity is limited, with 2P being able to control the camera (alongside 1P), throw fruit to get rid of enemies, and reveal coins.
In all honesty, it seems like playing with a second player kills some of the puzzle vibes of the game which is a tad disappointing, but we will see how this plays out in the full release. Much like certain driving options on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, this is likely a move to keep the game accessible for younger audiences who are more likely to play couch co-op. But at first blush, Nintendo 3DS purchasers don’t appear to be missing much.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker for Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch was revealed in the March 2018 Nintendo Direct. The game is (by all means) a re-release of the Wii U version, with an added co-op mode and dedicated Super Mario Odyssey levels. Leading up to release, Nintendo hasn’t been shy about showing off the game in various gameplay trailers. In fact, a demo of the game is available for the Switch version right now.
As mentioned above, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is already available on Wii U, where DualShockers awarded the game an 8.0 out of 10. The game comes out on Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch on July 13, 2018. Check out the Nintendo Minute below, or pre-order the excellent puzzle game via Amazon.
